Hypnosis
is a somewhat altered state of
consciousness and awareness,
although the conscious mind is
still present. It is a natural
state of mind characterized
by deep relaxation, heightened
imagination, and focused concentration.
Some examples of being in a hypnotic
state naturally are when you are
focused on a project, concentrated
on a certain thought, shopping,
reading a book or watching TV.
You are relaxed, focused and open
to ideas or suggestions and your
imagination is engaged.
The therapist
facilitates deep relaxation so
that the critical censor of the
mind can be bypassed and positive,
encouraging, suggestions can
be given to effect the subconscious
part of the mind which cannot
reason but accepts the suggestions.
You are still aware of what is
happening and if you really want
to, you can come out of hypnosis
at any time, however, because the
suggestions are positive and directed
at something specific that you
want to change, you stay relaxed
until the therapist directs you
to come back to a waking state.
The subconscious will reject anything
that is in conflict with its values
and beliefs.
Hypnosis can be helpful with the
following:
- Weight gain/weight loss
- Smoking
Cessation
- Phobias/Fears
- Stress
Management
